INTRODUCTION AND MEANING OF ICT IN EDUCATION
ICTs stand for information and
communication technologies. UNESCO has defined ICT as forms of technology that
are used to transmit, process, store, create, display, share or exchange
information by electronic means. It includes not only traditional technologies
like radio and television, but also modern ones like cellular phones, computers
and networks, hardware and software, satellite systems and so on, as well as
the various services and applications associated with them, such as
videoconferencing.
Education is one of the major sectors
which have undergone the influence of innovations in ICT. Starting from
providing online content services, platform for organizing learning experiences
to managing learning and assessment has been changed greatly by ICT
developments. Students, teachers and educational administrators and every
stakeholder in education have been benefitted by the integration of ICT in
education.
ICT in education means teaching and
learning with ICT. Educational ICT tools can be divided into 3 categories:
Input source, Output source and others. Worldwide research has shown that ICT can lead to improved student
learning and better teaching methods. A report made by the National Institute of
Multimedia Education in Japan, proved that an increase in student exposure to
educational ICT through curriculum integration has a significant and positive
impact on student achievement, especially in terms of Knowledge, Comprehension, Practical skill and Presentation skill in
subject areas such as mathematics, science, and social study.
